1. What watercolor techniques proved to be effective in your painting? How and Why? I used the eventual buildup of color, but the main technique I used the most was the edge of the brush to outline the windows and add the fences in front of the windows. The flat headed brushed proved to be the most effective at adding the straight lines I wanted, though none are perfectly straight. However I think the unstraightness makes my painting look more organic and original. 2. How important was using transparent layers in your painting? It was most important, in my opinion, at the beginning. The original wash of the basic colors of each building and sky acted as the base for the rest of the painting, therefore making the more pigmented colors pop. 3. Explain how your composition was successful? Did you utilize all the elements of art and principles of design? Explain. My composition was extremely successful. I was very happy that I chose a cityscape in Spain. The organization of all the differing lines made the piece that more fun to paint. I especially liked how one of the buildings is in front of the other three, making it the focal point of the piece. 4. Was color choice an important factor in the overall success of the painting? Why? Yes, color choice is probably what I like best about my piece. That is one of the main reasons I picked the photo I did. The grungy, neutral tones pair very well in contrasting the bright blueness of the sky. I really am proud of how well the colors work together in harmony. 5. Describe your craftsmanship. On this piece specifically, I feel like I did my best work with the colors. As mentioned above, the colors really proved to work well together. 6. If you were able to do something different what would it be and why? If I were to do anything differently, it would be the amount of time I had to finish this piece. I felt like I was not able to get the amount of detail I wanted into to piece. 7. Explain to me what you have learned about watercolor and how it has improved or discouraged your development in art. I had never done watercolor before, so this project proved to be difficult. It was extremely hard to find the right balance of water and pigment. Especially during the practice, I would rip the paper because I would use too much water. The struggle with this has made me a better artist because I have now learned how to better control my brush strokes, and use the brushes to create more interesting textures.

For this mini project, we picked out a type of fruit/ veggie to paint in four different color schemes. The color schemes I chose were triadic, split complementary, complentory, and primary. I had never done water color before, so this project seemed a bit tedious to me. As the project went on, however, I was able to get a better grasp of watercolor and I think my final project is something I can be proud of.
At the start of the year, Ms. Rossi had us do a series of practice activities to better prepare us for upcoming water color projects. We learned different techniques with water types, wet and dry paint, and even how to incorporate prisma colored pencils into watercolor. |
